OWL-ing

Last night, October 8, at 8:00 PM six souls, including Jason Sodergren, met at Jason's home and banding operation. The evening was mostly clear with some Westerly breezes, in the 40 F degree range. We foregathered in the lower parking lot where we listened to recordings of various owl vocalizations....

Diamond Ceek

I made the following observations on my monthly COASST beach survey at Diamond Creek beach. I was amazed to see Pink Salmon literally plugging the lower creek there, similar to Beluga Slough. The only rarity were two Solitary Sandpipers along the surf line, landing on exposed rocks with gulls. There...

Re: Homer Costa's Hummingbird

I went there yesterday, Sept. 13, 2017 and found it twice. Not the best photo but it shows the ("Gorgeous"?) diagnostic gorgets of a male Costa's.

Mud Bay shorebirds

I stopped at Mud Bay tonight, July 27, at 7:30, one hour after high tide. I was surprised to see so many shorebirds in attendance. This is what I observed; 150) Peeps, predominately Westerns with at least 5) Least Sandpipers 1) Sanderling 8) Black Turnstones 30+) Semipalmated Plovers 6) Yellowlegs S...

"RED" Finch on the Spit

I was looking for shorebirds on Saturday, July 15 at around 4:00 PM. I was at the east-facing gravel beach where Louie's Lagoon meets the tall grassy berm, a gambrel roofed derelict charter building is there. I saw a very red finch flitting around the upper beach. It stopped and perched on a protrud...

SURFBIRDS

I stopped by Sixty Foot Rock last evening, June 27, and was surprised to see 38 SURFBIRDS huddled low on the South end of the rock. Also found one DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT there among the many PELEAGICS. Earlier in the day we saw several (6-7?) HORNED PUFFINS on the water near Gull Island. Bird on! ...

SAW-WHET OWL

I have been hearing a Saw-whet Owl "beeping" in our back yard by East Skyline Drive

for about 7 weeks. We have a Goldeneye/Owl nest box in the general location and I was hopeful! Last evening about 10:30 I was able to confirm occupancy.

Mystery Shorebird

Carol Harding, Randy Wiesser and myself saw this shorebird at the very end of our shorebird monitoring session at Louie's Lagoon last evening at about 4:20 pm. We first saw it on the lower beach near the barge launch and it moved Southward. It was with a Semipalmated Plover for size comparison. We d...

PACIFIC WREN

Today, March 28, we have had a PACIFIC WREN at our house on East Skyline Drive. Very unusual! 2016 was the first year that I have seen one at our house and locale.
