800 COMMON MERGANZERS!

I was driving past the "Fishing Hole" on the Spit today, Dec. 21, at 2:00 PM and noticed an extensive flock of birds off shore on the East side of the Spit, parallel to the Fishing Hole. I pulled up to the beach where the city has campsites, got out of the car and was astonished to see a h...

CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE

This morning, Dec. 7, I saw a single Chestnut-backed Chickadee at our feeder on East Skyline Drive. We have had feeders off and on for over 30 years here and this is the very first one I have seen, here. It is a handsome bird! We have also had 60 Gray-crowned Rosyfinches at the feeder, in the last t...

Re: Starlings

Today, Dec. 2 at 4:00 pm, I saw a flock of 19 E. STARLINGS across from the Post Office. They were associating with Crows. I wonder if it is legal to "target practice" with a slingshot in city limits?

Bird on!

1400 ROCK SANDPIPERS

Today, Nov. 24, at 3:30 pm I saw a large flock of Rock Sandpipers strung out in front of Honey's Place on the Spit, approximately 1400 birds. The tide was ebbing but not too far out yet. I was able to do a good count because they all stayed put while I counted, occasionally joined by additional smal...

Rusty Blackbirds, they're back?

Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2:00 PM I saw a flock of approximately 35 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS on the highway side of the Homer Animal Shelter. It was hard to get an exact count because they were in small groups flying back and forth between spruce tops, and I without binocs. Apparently they are eating spruce cone s...

OWLing, Oct. 10

This is a summary of our Kachemak Birders sponsored OWLing field trip last night, Oct. 10 at 8:30 pm, at Carl Wynn Center on East Skyline. We had a big, enthusiastic turnout, we had more cars than parking! I counted 35 souls including four youth down to a 3 year old. We all filed quietly through the...

Migrating Geese and Peeps

Today, August 20, at about 1:30 PM a flock of 30 Canada Geese flew over the Spit by the Harbor, in "V" formation, heading Northeast. Also tonight at Mud Bay at about 8:30 pm there were about 300 Peeps, 260 puddle Ducks (too far for positive ID but looked like many Teal with bigger ducks) a...

HUDSONIAN GODWITS

I saw three juvenile plumage Hudsonian Godwits today, July 29, 5:00pm on the bay side of Honey's Place (first house on the left going out on the Spit Rd.), outgoing tide. They were cooperative and let me get very close for iPhone shots. They also were swimming like waterfowl for a while, I didn't kn...

Re: CASPIAN TERNS

One of my current lodging guests is a boy about 12 years old who is a very good birder. He is the one who saw the Caspian Tern last night near Mud Bay. This afternoon, July 11, he saw two more at Mud Bay. He is familiar with them in California and even had a photo of one from today.

GYRFALCON

Last evening, July 2, at about 6:30 I was barbecuing on my deck on East Skyline. I saw a large, dark raptor flying in a straight line, low elevation towards me. I could see pointy wings and a cheek pattern, so not a Goshawk, but maybe Peregrine? It passed by me at eye level and actually cocked it's ...
