Birding Trip to Beluga Slough: 9-9-17

Kachemak Bay Birders enjoyed a great day of birding along Beluga Slough and scoping out over the inlet on Saturday.  We had a variety of weather during our three hours there, but overall not too many sprinkles nor too chilly. (What's a little weather when there are birds to be seen?)  One unexpected...

Birding Trip with Karl Stoltzfus: 8-26-17

This morning's trip out on the Bay with Karl Stoltzfus (Bay Excursions) was marvelous!  We woke up to heavy rain clouds and fog out over the bay, but by the time we were ready to go, the fog had broken up and we didn't have even a drop of rain the whole time, no wind, and very calm waters. Many good...

Definitely A Great Day To Bird!!

This is from Michelle Michaud (7-23-17) Went to the Anchor River/Anchor Point beach today around 12:30 pm.  The day was sunny, the winds calm, and few people despite the glorious weather.   Ten (10) different shorebird species were observed along the beach, in the wetlands/mud flat area (near the ri...

Possisbly not an AMERICAN REDSTART

I got another email from David Sibley this morning and he thinks it might not have been an American Redstart he heard yesterday at the Diamond Creek Trail area, but possibly a Yellow Warbler.  He said he was "...questioning the Redstart ID.  But maybe still worth checking." If anyone comes...

Possibly not an AMERICAN REDSTART (??)

I received this from David Sibley last night: I was just outside Homer on the Diamond Ridge trail to the beach this afternoon at about 5 pm and heard an American Redstart song clearly and several times. It was near the top of the trail, in the ravine just upstream from where the trail first comes to...

Birding Trip to the North Fork Road

KACHEMAK BAY BIRDERS’ TRIP TO THE NORTH FORK ROAD: 6-10-17 About a dozen Kachemak Bay Birders enjoyed a superlative trip on Saturday to the south end of the North Fork Road! We began at the bridge about two miles in from the intersection and walked west along the road. What a splendid day and we sta...

Crane Colts and songbirds!!

I went birding today and stopped to look at Beluga Slough. Saw 2 SANDHILL CRANE colts! However, I also counted 16 BALD EAGLES on the ground! Also 2 TRUMPETER SWANS were there. Species heard/seen the following locations: the platform area at the end of FAA Rd., at the City Reservoir, and along the ro...

Eveline Park: Birds 8, Birders 8

Michael Craig’s report from the Kachemak Bay Birders’ trip to Eveline Park on the 20th... A new record was set on this field trip: we had more birders than we had species of birds. It was simply too early. The snow was gone (barely), but it was still very brown. The weather was lovely, with only a m...

"Old Tern Colony"

Sunday (16th) I stopped by the "Old Tern Colony" as we call the little road that takes off from Kachemak Drive, a ways east of Lampert Lake, and goes to the airport's Gate 6. Found some CANADA or CACKLING GEESE (a ways off behind some grass and brush), a singing DARK-EYED JUNCO, at least 4...
