Species heard/seen the following locations: the platform area at the end of FAA Rd., at the City Reservoir, and along the ro...

Eveline Park: Birds 8, Birders 8

Michael Craig’s report from the Kachemak Bay Birders’ trip to Eveline Park on the 20th... A new record was set on this field trip: we had more birders than we had species of birds. It was simply too early. The snow was gone (barely), but it was still very brown. The weather was lovely, with only a m...

"Old Tern Colony"

Sunday (16th) I stopped by the "Old Tern Colony" as we call the little road that takes off from Kachemak Drive, a ways east of Lampert Lake, and goes to the airport's Gate 6. Found some CANADA or CACKLING GEESE (a ways off behind some grass and brush), a singing DARK-EYED JUNCO, at least 4...

Reports as of April 15th

Nina Faust saw a BELTED KINGFISHER at the outlet of Beluga Slough on the 13th. She said she’s seen it near the sign there and it cooperates by sitting still long enough for photos. Earlier one was seen near the outlet of the Lake by the culvert on a tree snag. Reports of a BROWN CREEPER on Beluga La...

Victoria Winne's Early FOS Bay Birds!!

Talk about a great day to bird and be out on the bay! As we left the harbor, piped on our way by 50 or so ROCK SANDPIPERS, en route to Kasitsna Bay Lab to pick up Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies school kids, a Humpback Whale surfaced just in front of us. That augured well right there. On the retu...

SURFBIRDS, CROSSBILLS, Beluga Slough Arrivals

Carla Stanley reported 53 SURFBIRDS at the Deep Water Dock on Saturday. (George West's list of average earliest arrival dates says April 30th.) RED CROSSBILLS reported at the top of West Hill coming to a feeder, reported by Jinky Handy. From George Matz: Some new arrivals at Beluga Slough. A TRUMPET...

RUSTY BLACKBIRD and MERLIN

(from AKBirding)
A pair was at the edge of Beluga Slough, across from the post office today. On the water, 4 Steller Sealion were close to shore off Ocean Drive Loop (not common in Kachemak Bay). Saw my first MERLIN three days ago... next up a swallow?

A single Greater Yellowlegs flew past Ocean Drive Loop today, before the weather front came through. Remarkably early.

Hodgepodge of Birds and One Coyote

Wednesday someone thought they saw a low flying pair of swans near the airport so today I went looking for them. No success, but did find the following in Beluga Slough: COMMON MERGANSERS, BUFFLEHEAD, AMERICAN WIGEON, MALLARDS, NORTHWESTERN CROWS, BALD EAGLE, MEW GULLS, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, GLAUC...
