"Old Tern Colony"

Postby lani » Mon Apr 17, 2017 7:28 am

Sunday (16th) I stopped by the "Old Tern Colony" as we call the little road that takes off from Kachemak Drive, a ways east of Lampert Lake, and goes to the airport's Gate 6. Found some CANADA or CACKLING GEESE (a ways off behind some grass and brush), a singing DARK-EYED JUNCO, at least 4 very vocal GREATER YELLOWLEGS, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, GRAY JAY, NORTHERN PINTAIL (pair) and MALLARD (pair).

The last couple years folks have noticed that there have been far fewer birds in there, less or no nesting. This year more water than usual. Construction of some sort occurring on the other side of the fence, with cars parking on the outside of the fence right there. Maybe a better place to visit very early or very late or on weekends?
