KACHEMAK BAY BIRDERS’ TRIP TO THE NORTH FORK ROAD: 6-10-17

About a dozen Kachemak Bay Birders enjoyed a superlative trip on Saturday to the south end of the North Fork Road! We began at the bridge about two miles in from the intersection and walked west along the road. What a splendid day and we started early enough, at 7:00 am, to find and hear a large number of birds. Good timing also as there was hardly any traffic the first hour or so--and, let it be said, not too many mosquitoes.

A highlight was an AMERICAN DIPPER singing! They have a complex and beautiful song but rarely do we get to hear them sing. This was a treat! The NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH were also singing. Despite its name, this is actually a warbler, with a loud distinctive song. Many ALDER FLYCATCHERS were sounding off, which they do so frequently, and one WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE.

Good sightings and photos of many species. The 32 species that we saw and/or heard:
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER

GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL
SANDHILL CRANE

In addition to our feathered friends, many of us also enjoyed finding Nagoon Berry flowers (tons of them) and some blooming beach peas also.

A huge thank you to our trip leaders, Lori Paulsrud and Michael Craig!
