Trip to the Anchor River: 1-13-18

Postby lani » Wed Jan 17, 2018 1:00 pm

From Michael Craig, leader for this trip...

9 brave souls ventured forth to the tractor ramp near the mouth of the Anchor River this morning, facing pelting rain, high winds, rough seas, and chilly, though not bone chilling, temperatures. The following species were observed.

Gulls, Glaucous-winged, Herring, and Mew
Ducks, Scoter Sp (probably Black), Harlequin, Long-tailed, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Merganser Sp
Cormorant SP (probably pelagic)
Common Murres
Loon Sp
Bald Eagle

There well may have been other species seen by one or more of the observers, but the recorders hands were not working well, so the list comes from memory. The abundance of Sp's listed above is a direct result of the difficult viewing conditions. The Anchor River lived up to it's reputation for unpleasantness at this time of year, but it was also rewarding, giving the observers time to discuss the various plumage features of the gulls that were seen. To quote a fellow member of the KBB, "It was a good day to bird."
