Birding Trip to the Spit: 2-10-18

Postby lani » Sun Feb 11, 2018 9:27 am

A few Kachemak Bay Birders birded the Spit on Saturday morning and found many species and that the weather prediction was wrong--it was warm and no precipitation and even the wind at the end of the spit was gentle and short-lived. Can't ask for more than that!

We found a small group of ROCK SANDPIPERS over near the entrance to the Harbor with a lone DUNLIN amongst them. Larger groups of ROCK SANDPIPERS have been seen elsewhere very recently. We looked for the BELTED KINGFISHER near the Harbor but didn't find it. (We'd love to hear if anyone finds it again.) Lots of ice in the Fishing Hole, Barge Basin also. We saw Harbor Porpoises and some extremely cute otters, one little one especially that was by the fueling stations in the Harbor. Yes I know this is a birding report...

A big thanks to Michael Craig for leading this trip. It was, as we are so fond of saying, A Great Day to Bird!
