Kachemak Bay Birders' Trip out with Karl: 9-8-18

Our trip out with Karl Stoltzfus (Bay Excursions) could not have been planned for a better morning. An ideal, warm, sunny, no wind gorgeous morning as we headed out west of the spit. Great birds and then finally a group of 4 orcas to enjoy for the grand finale. A huge thank you to Karl!

In addition to MARBLED MURRELETS, ANCIENT MURRELETS were seen, close enough so we could all see the characteristic markings and different bill color. This was the closest many of us had ever been to the ANCIENT MURRELETS and photographers got good shots.

We encountered SOOTY SHEARWATERS at first, then SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS mixed together. I personally could watch them flying for hours--what a beautiful bird to see in flight (and for sure well-named).

We enjoyed watching little groups of RED-NECKED PHALAROPES all along. Photographers were happy with how close we got to some of them, with the good light and lack of waves--overall excellent photography opportunities all morning.

PIGEON GUILLEMOTS were tricky at first for some of us because some were light-colored juveniles and some were much darker adults just going out of breeding plumage, so we were seeing vastly different-looking birds.

As we were returning, we saw a pod of 4 orcas and got to see them many times breaching. Breathtaking to watch!

A very sincere thank you to Karl Stoltzfus! He knew where to find those birds, and the whales, too.

Species we found:
PACIFIC LOON
Loon sp. (probable COMMON LOON)
RED-NECKED GREBE
SOOTY SHEARWATER

POMERANE JAEGER
