Kachemak Bay Birders Outing to Seldovia

Led by Cindy Mom of Seldovia Nature Tours
A group 19 birders from the Homer side and 5 from the Seldovia side rendezvoused at Seldovia Harbor. (Homer participants crossed the bay either on the Kachemak Voyager "Fast Ferry" or by sailboat.) We walked down Main Street and stopped to look out on Seldovia Bay, spotting Pigeon Guillemots on the water. Cindy provided interpretation of Seldovia and the birds that visit this area. We then headed to Inside Beach for a picnic lunch, with a couple of Steller's Jays calling from the woods. After lunch we headed for the Otterbahn Trail that goes from Seldovia to Outside Beach. This trail was built by students from Seldovia and is a beautiful walk in the woods. We stopped several times to listen for woodland birds and enjoy the large magnificent Sitka spruce trees. We did hear Ravens calling to each other, as well as Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, White-winged Crossbill, Pine Siskin, and Dark-eyed Junco.
We arrived at Sandy Beach, looking for sea birds and shore birds, they seemed to be keeping themselves hidden. The views from the beach were spectacular, on this hot August day. We continued up the trail stopping at a cliff's edge looking out to Cook Inlet; everyone was enjoying the view. We were greeted by a flock of Chestnut-backed Chickadees, a species found on the southern part of the Kenai Peninsula but not often seen in Homer. We then arrived at Outside Beach after a bit of rock scrambling and hustling to avoid the in-coming tide.
My personal highlight from the beach was seeing two Eaglets stretching their wings getting ready to fly.
A special thanks to Cindy Mom for a well guided tour of the area. Her interpretation and stories were greatly appreciated.

This was a fantastic group of like-minded birders. Thanks to the participants on this outing for making it such a pleasure!
