Birding Anchor Point

Postby Michelle Michaud » Tue Aug 24, 2010 7:46 pm

Observed 10 Least Sandpipers and four (4) Black Turnstones at the beach at Anchor Point today, plus 2 Brandts. I was able to rescue a juvenile Glaucous-winged Gull that had fishing line wrapped around (tightly) both feet. The bird was trying to fly off when I was walking down the beach. I saw the fishing line attached to the bird. I pulled the line along with the bird into shore and proceeded to remove the fishing line. The gull was pretty good about letting me remove the line. I was amazed at how wound the line was around both legs, with about 12 inches of line between both feet. Remember, whenever you are on the beach and you see pieces of fishing line be sure and pick them up and throw them away.
