Last night, October 8, was the "Owling" Field Trip sponsored by Kachemak Bay Birders. Fifteen people, ranging in age from 5 to 70+ years and including three FBI (youth birders group) members, gathered at 8:30 pm at the Carl Wynn Nature Center. We all filed quietly into the woods and cabin. I played calls from various owl species, concentrating mostly on NORTHERN SAW-WHET (NSWO) calls. After about 25 minutes of no responses I decided we would all re-group at the muskeg at mile .7 Ohlson Mtn. Road. Just as we started talking we got two responses from a not too distant NSWO. That was unfortunately the highlight of the evening!
Our now reduced group of eight (? guessing, it was dark!) stalwart "owlers" re-grouped at the Olhson Mt. Road muskeg, now about 9:35 pm. We called for another 25 minutes without responses. We quit at 10:00pm.
The weather was not ideal with intermittent rain and some wind, temperature around 42 degrees F.
Considering all, it was "a great night to bird!".
