Trip to the Spit: 11-12-16

As I sit here writing this report, I still feel a bit wet and there is drop of water yet on my glasses. My notebook became so soggy it was nearly useless. Yes, it was a wet trip! An amazing number of Kachemak Bay Birders showed up, birded diligently in spite of the rainstorm and found 24 species out on the spit. Visibility was not good due to lighting, rain coming down, and optics--including eye glasses--getting speckled and nonfunctional. But it is “a poor craftsman who blames her tools” in this case optics...and there at the end when we were all quite wet, we had our Motto that reminds us: It’s A Great Day To Bird! We had fun out there and especially want to thank Michael Craig for leading our trip.

The species we found were:
COMMON LOON
RED-NECKED GREBE
PELAGIC CORMORANT
MALLARD
LONG-TAILED DUCK
EURASIAN WIGEONS (2 in Mud Bay)
AMERICAN WIGEONS
NORTHERN PINTAIL
BLACK SCOTERS
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER
COMMON GOLDENEYE
HERRING GULL
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE
MEW GULL
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL
MARBLED MURRELET
ROCK SANDPIPERS
DUNLIN
BALD EAGLE
ROCK PIGEON
NORTHWESTERN CROW
COMMON RAVEN
SONG SPARROW
(any others please let me know?)

Other wildlife included a sea lion, many seals and sea otters, some harbor porpoises and one very fast-moving wind surfer!
