Bird sightings and reports from around the Kachemak Bay area in Alaska

Walking up to my house today I heard a 'thud' up on the deck, as I looked over the fence all I could see were feathers floating in the air. I was afraid my dog might have got a bird but when I opened the gate a Sharp-shinned Hawk flew up into the tree. I appreciated the close-up view (8 ft away) of this bird for about 20 seconds before it flew off. Turning around to go into the house I found a Varied Thrush sitting on the steps. I picked it up, didn't find any obvious wounds but it was very stunned and didn't struggle. I left it in a box on the porch (protected from the dog and the sharpie) and after 20 minutes or so it flew up into the Mtn. Ash tree. I would have thought a Thrush was a little big for a Sharpie but I guess if they can knock them down it's dinner.
