SHORT-EARED OWL

Postby lani » Sun Feb 19, 2017 10:23 pm

There was a SHORT-EARED OWL in a tree for maybe half an hour this evening, in the snow, far away,

down just above the beach. Usually flying around when we see them but this one was sitting there for quite a while.

I saw a SHORT-EARED OWL again the morning of the 21st flying over the fields here.

The GBBC folks won’t put the sighting (on the 19th) on the list until someone checks my photo and says it is a correct report. It was in the tree on the 19th and then yesterday we saw it flying around about 8:30 am. (The Checklist of Birds of Kachemak Bay lists them as "rare" in fall and winter, "uncommon" in spring and summer.)

We see them occasionally here at my house where there are hay fields and a good view up and down the Bay. When we eat meals we are also looking out the windows and when I'm cooking and doing dishes, the window looks out over this area. Maybe there are more around than our checklist would indicate, or maybe more now than previously?
