ICELAND GULL, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, N. SHOVELERS!

The gull watching in Homer has been excellent this week. Dave Sonneborn and I spent some time picking through the flocks on the spit on the 20th and 21st and found a few interesting birds. The best location to look is at the offal outflow pipe between Land's End hotel and the ferry dock. When they are processing there have been at least 2000 gulls here. At other times the birds have been distributed along the west beach, especially after a large swell event.

On the 20th we found a first-cycle "KUMLIEN'S" ICELAND GULL at the offal pipe. On the 21st this bird was on the west beach of the spit, opposite the harbor. Descriptions and photos are on these ebird checklists:

Also, on the 20th we briefly watched what I believe was probably an adult "KAMCHATKA" MEW GULLl. It was in a flock of about 600 Mew Gulls at the offal pipe and unfortunately slipped away before I could get a photo. A full description is on the first ebird checklist.

Other gulls around include 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS (a second-cycle and an adult), and at least 2 first-cycle THAYER'S GULLS (a photo is included in the second ebird checklist). Dave also had two or more BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES on the 19th.

In non-gull news. At least 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR is still hanging out in the grassy ditch at the Heritage RV Park and 4 NORTHERN SHOVELERS were in the Barge Basin on the 21st.

Good birding,

Aaron Lang
