KACHEMAK BAY BIRD ALERT INFORMATION October 23, 2014

On the 18th there were 3 HUMMINGBIRDS reported out in the Fernwood Rd. area (about 7 miles out East End Rd). Species was not reported. On the 19th one was seen at Maura's in Old Town but again the species was not determined.

On the 23rd there was a report of possible PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (7) in Mud Bay. On the 18th a GREAT BLUE HERON was seen on the Spit, but not exactly where. There was only one report and unfortunately they don't stick around too long usually.

Several reports of WILSON'S SNIPE from far flung areas. A pair was digging worms in the lawn near West Homer Elementary on the 14, some up on Skyline, others near Miller's Landing. And an interesting report on the 11th of one walking up East Hill Road, actually in the road which was covered with an inch of snow! (Aaron Lang said that they will hang around so long as there is some open fresh water, and occasionally in Cordova they stayed all year.)

At the upper end of Beluga Lake on the 21st and 22nd WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, TRUMPETER SWANS (3), BUFFLEHEAD, EURASIAN WIGEON, COMMON GOLDENEYE, RED-NECKED GREBE, many SCAUP, and a possible PEREGRINE FALCON.

On the Calvin and Coyle Trail on the 14th and 16th the following were seen: RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BOREAL CHICKADEE, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, STELLER'S JAY, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, HAIRY WOODPECKER, GRAY JAY.

Near Miller's Landing, large groups of SCAUP (500+) and MALLARDS (500+) have been seen recently, PINE GROSBEAKS and NORTHERN SHRIKE also reported on the 22nd . And a Shrike was reported up on Diamond Ridge last week.

A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was seen flying over the Blackwater Bend area north of town on the 14th.

A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen flying over the Spit on Sept. 23 (late report) near Green Timbers; it seemed tame, the report stated, getting close and flitting from beach to driftwood.

A CASSIN'S AUKLET was seen in Eldred Passage near the mouth of Sadie Cove on the 5th.

At the Anchor River on the 6th, ROCK SANDPIPERS (3) and a DUNLIN were seen.
