Kachemak Bay Bird Alert Information: 3-7-15

There have been many reports coming in which would indicate a (very) early spring. VARIED THRUSH have been reported in many parts of town, down lower and up high on the bluff and even way out on the Northfork Rd., singing enthusiastically. Last week a pair of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was observed beginning a nest near the Library and a SONG SPARROW nearby was singing almost its complete song. Out on Skyline East, some BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES were apparently starting a nest. A pair of SWANS (probably, but not for sure, TRUMPETER) were in some open water at the upper end of Beluga Lake on March 4th. They could be the pair that nests there. Also the THAYER'S GULL in breeding plumage that was seen this week.

A PURPLE FINCH was positively identified on March 4th in a yard up above the Kachemak Community Center off Bear Creek Rd. The end of February in her yard there was a CASSIN'S FINCH, TREE SPARROW and some RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS (3) and SAW-WHET OWL heard regularly in that area. A CASSIN'S FINCH was also seen at the top of McLay Rd on Feb. 8th.

On March 7th at Seaside Farms, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen in with WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS (15). RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS have been there all winter and VARIED THRUSH now singing. Earlier in February, there was a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in the Fernwood Rd. area a little farther out East End Rd.

On March 5th RUSTY BLACKBIRDS (20+) were seen on the trails below IOVC, also some COMMON REDPOLLS.

A THAYER'S GULL in breeding plumage was spotted near the Fishing Hole on February 20th. It was seen several times again in several places on toward the end of the Spit.

On Feb. 21st there was a report of a few possible WESTERN GREBES off the west side of the Spit, out from the Frosty Bear Building. As they are not on our Checklist of Birds of Kachemak Bay, there were many earnest folks out looking to see if they could be found again. Unfortunately no one was able to find them again despite some serious scoping also from some other locations out there. This sighting would be unsubstantiated, however the person who reported them is quite familiar with that species.
