KACHEMAK BAY BIRD ALERT INFORMATION: April 23rd, 2015

Homer has been having very changeable weather. The joke that if you don't like what's happening wait an hour...sometimes 10 minutes is quite sufficient!
Many birds arriving and it's only two weeks until the Shorebird Festival!! It's a Great Time to Bird!
SABINE'S GULLS (2) were seen from Land's End on the 21st. (One had been reported in Jakalof Harbor on April 1st.) Also seen were a FORKED-TAILED STORM-PETREL and RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (1).
CANADA GEESE (“of some kind”) and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were on the ground at Beluga Slough on the 20th. After a few days of bad winds and this is what we get. Also report of cranes heading our way from east of Soldotna on the 20th, but SANDHILL CRANES were seen landing in Beluga Slough on the 21st which may be the first seen on the ground.
Shorebird Monitors found GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS in Mud Bay and Beluga Slough on the 21st. At Anchor Point they found: PECTORAL SANDPIPER (1), BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS (9), DUNLIN (2), and GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Monitoring across the Bay: ROCK SANDPIPERS (4) at Gull Island and BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS (5) on Cohen Island.
Also seen during the monitoring on the Spit: RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS (9+), HARLEQUIN DUCKS, LONG-TAILED DUCKS, COMMON GOLDENEYES, COMMON LOONS. Beluga Lake: NORTHERN SHOVELERS for a FOS! Beluga Slough: AMERICAN WIGEON and EURASIAN WIGEON (1)
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are still being seen at Seaside Farms and on Fernwood Rd area. Reports from around town of WHITE-CROWNED, GOLDEN-CROWNED, and FOX SPARROWS. RUBY-CROWNED and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and many VARIED THRUSH.
Be sure to report all crane observations to CraneWatch 235-6262 or reports@cranewatch.org.
