KACHEMAK BAY BIRD ALERT INFORMATION: May 22, 2015

A RED KNOT was seen in Louie's Lagoon on evening of the 21th (See our website posting for photos!!). This one was not in breeding plumage; the earlier one seen during the Festival had been in breeding plumage. Also seen there were SURFBIRDS, DOWITCHERS sp., DUNLIN, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, BLACKBELLIED PLOVER, WESTERN SANDPIPERS.

At Mud Bay/Lighthouse Village this week: RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (1), WESTERN SANDPIPERS, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, DOWITCHERS, DUNLIN, SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, WHIMBRELS, NORTHERN HARRIER.

There was another large influx of shorebirds after the Festival. On the 12th George Matz estimated 8000 Western/Dunlins (75%/25%), and on the 13th there were 3500, seen primarily from Mud Bay.

In the Harbor area and at the end of the spit: WANDERING TATTLERS and SURFBIRDS were seen.

In Beluga Slough area recently: BELTED KINGFISHER, SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, WHIMBREL, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, both YELLOWLEG species, DOWITCHERS sp., CANADA GEESE, LAPLAND LONGSPSURS, AMERICAN PIPITS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, SANDHIILL CRANES, TERN sp. On the 14th some ALEUTIAN CACKLING GEESE were reported.

Beluga Lake: pair of nesting TRUMPETER SWANS visible from the viewing platforms on FAA Rd. Also NORTHERN HARRIER frequently seen, many LINCOLN'S, FOX and GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS.

East of the Paul Banks School area near Calvin and Coyle Trail: ALDER FLYCATCHER, HERMIT THRUSH, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. LINCOLN'S, SAVANNAH, FOX, GOLEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, WILSON'S SNIPE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. WILSON'S WARBLERS first reported on the 20th there and in other parts of town.

At the Anchor River: PACIFIC and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, WHIMBRELS, WANDERING TATTLERS, both YELLOWLEG sp., both DOWITCHER sp., SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, PEREGRINE FALCON, TUFTED PUFFIN, SAVANNAH SPARROW. Anchor Point: SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, MERLIN, WILSON'S WARBLER, COMMON REDPOLL, PINE GROSBEAKS.

Earlier report from Sadie Cove: HERMIT THRUSH, PACIFIC WREN, STELLER'S JAY, SONG SPARROW, PINE SISKIN, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES.

VIOLET-GREEN and TREE SWALLOWS have been reported in many areas but no Bank Swallows yet. However, a BARN SWALLOW was seen at the Anchor River on the 16th. (They are listed as “accidental” in summer, no previous reports in other seasons.)

WHIMBRELS are also being seen in grassy areas around town. One person said she had seen nesting crows chase them off twice, unfortunately.
