Kachemak Bay Bird Alert Information: 6-5-15

KACHEMAK BAY BIRD ALERT INFORMATION: June 5, 2015
In the Mariner Park Lagoon area on the 5th a GREAT BLUE HERON and MARBLED GODWITS (2). Both are “Rare” according to the current Checklist of Birds of Kachemak Bay.

At the City Reservoir on the June 1st an OSPREY was seen also BELTED KINGFISHER, SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, TRUMPETER SWANS, AMERICAN WIGEON, RED-NECKED GREBE.

MERLINS are nesting just below the Hospital near Barlett St.

BANK SWALLOWS have returned to their nesting area east of Miller's Landing. First seen in large numbers on May 29th, there were about 50 reported along one stretch. There are nesting areas all the way to Fritz Creek scattered along the most fortuitious bank areas. A BARN SWALLOW was seen at the Anchor River on May 16th and we would be interested if anyone has seen it since. (They are listed as “accidental” in summer, no previous reports in other seasons.)

On the 26th at the Anchor River WANDERING TATTLERS (3), SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, and YELLOWLEGS were reported.

There were reports on the 26th of RUDDY TURNSTONES (2), DUNLIN, and LEAST SANDPIPERS in Louie's Lagoon.

YELLOW-BILLED LOON at the green buoy can off the west side of the Spit on the 29th.

BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS have been reported on Cohen Island.

At Beluga Slough on the 26th the following were seen: MARBLED GODWIT (1), YELLOWLEGS, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (1), BELTED KINGFISHERS, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, AMERICAN PIPIT. Others seen/heard recently include AMERICAN WIGEON, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, MALLARD, NORTHERN PINTAIL, SWALLOWS (BANK, VIOLET-GREEN, TREE), TERNS (ALEUTIAN AND ARCTIC), HERMIT THRUSH, COMMON REDPOLL, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, FOX SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW.

The following birds were seen in the Fritz Creek area on May 25th: BLACKPOLL WARBLER (listed as “Uncommon” on our Checklist), WESTERN WOOD-PEEWEE (listed as “Rare”), TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, FOX SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, HERMIT THRUSH, VARIED THRUSH, AMERICAN ROBIN, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, PINE SISKINS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, COMMON REDPOLL, PINE GROSBEAK, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW, BELTED KINGFISHER, GRAY JAY, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, WILSON'S SNIPE, SANDHILL CRANE, RING-NECKED PHEASANT, BALD EAGLE.

As of the 5th, there has been one crane egg hatch! Others should be soon. There are 3 nests in Beluga Slough and one in the Mariner Park Lagoon area, and of course many others scattered throughout town and surrounding area. Be sure to report all crane observations especially nests to CraneWatch 235-6262 or reports@cranewatch.org.
