KACHEMAK BAY BIRD ALERT INFORMATION: June 20, 2015

Out in the Bay between 60 Foot Rock and the Spit there was a PARASITIC JAEGER and several SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS which were also seen off Humpy Creek (by Grewink Glacier). A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD on Yukon Island. BRANT (12) in the middle of the Bay to the east toward Bear Cove, and near there SURFBIRDS on Chugachik Island. These were sightings last week. A CRESTED AUKLET was seen at Point Pogibshi on the 14th.

A possible BRISTLE-THIGHED CURLEW was seen at Green Timbers on the 13th. Photos taken were not definitive enough to make a sure ID. This bird was seen by a master birder who has had several other encounters with them so he knew what to look for, and noted some of those characteristics, but unfortunately it flew straight at him so he did not see the rump color which would have been very helpful. He also saw a DUNLIN in breeding plumage; on the 18th there were a few WESTERN SANDPIPERS in Louie's Lagoon.

Recently there have been many great observations with photos not quite clear enough for a 100% sure ID. A CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE was reported on the 15th near Cosmic Kitchen. The photograph which was taken was not definitive enough to make a certain ID, and it could have been a Boreal but mentioned here in case anyone else might see it. Please report it if you do and hopefully get a good photo. They are quite rare on this side of the Bay but occasionally are here.

In the Fernwood area, there is a nesting MERLIN, also report of RING-NECKED PHEASANT family with 10 chicks there. (Not many seen in the last year.) An interesting partially leucistic AMERICAN ROBIN has been seen on Portlock. It is mated with an ordinary robin. Photos on the KBB website.

The following birds were seen or heard in Eveline Park on June 18th: ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, FOX SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, HERMIT THRUSH, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, PINE SISKINS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, TREE SWALLOW, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, WILSON'S SNIPE, SANDHILL CRANE.

At Eagle Lake (east of Homer about 19 miles) the nesting PACIFIC LOON pair has apparently lost all their chicks again this year. Very low survival rate out there. If anyone does see chicks please let us know!

On June 13th at the south end of the North Fork Road the following were seen on a Kachemak Bay Birders' trip: COMMON MERGANSER, WILSON'S SNIPE, RED TAILED (HARLAN'S) HAWK, MERLIN, BELTED KINGFISHER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, WESTERN WOOD PEWEE, BOREAL CHICKADEE, AMERICAN DIPPER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, AMERICAN ROBIN, HERMIT THRUSH, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, YELLOW WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, (disputed, photos still being analyzed) CASSIN'S FINCH or COMMON REDPOLL.

The first SANDHILL CRANE colt was seen on the 5th as previously reported and since then many more. Good places to see them are at the Lighthouse Village Platform and in Beluga Slough. Be sure to report all crane observations, especially colts, to CraneWatch 235-6262 or reports@cranewatch.org.
