Definitely A Great Day To Bird!!

Postby lani » Sun Jul 23, 2017 5:49 pm

This is from Michelle Michaud (7-23-17)
Went to the Anchor River/Anchor Point beach today around 12:30 pm.  The day was sunny, the winds calm, and few people despite the glorious weather.   Ten (10) different shorebird species were observed along the beach, in the wetlands/mud flat area (near the river), or along the Anchor River.  Here is a complete list of species observed:

Whimbrel - 29 roosting and feeding along the surf line
Greater Yellowleg - 5 (at least, as these birds are very flighty and travel between the beach and the river)
Lesser Yellowleg - 4 (again, at least this many)
Dowitcher sp. -2 feeding along the Anchor River
Wilson’s Snipe - 2 roosting along the Anchor River
Spotted Sandpiper - 1 along the beach
Least Sandpiper - 3 in the wetland/mud flats area - I almost missed them
Black Turnstone - 50 (estimate - several mixed flocks observed along the beach and the Anchor River)
Surfbirds - 30 (estimate - several mixed flocks observed along the beach and the Anchor River)
Ruddy Turnstone - 1 along the beach hanging out with some Black Turnstones

Other Birds:
Bald Eagle - 1 (surprisingly)
Northwestern Crow - 5
Glaucous-winged Gulls - many (very abundant)
Herring Gulls - at least one
Black-legged Kittiwakes - many, but not as abundant as GWGU
Common Loon - 3
Horned Puffins - 13 (they are headed south)
White-winged Scoter - 4
Mallard - 1 female on the river

It was definitely a GREAT DAY TO BIRD
