YEAR OF THE BIRD: TRIP TO MOSSY'S SEASIDE FARM
No one could have asked for a better day to visit Seaside Farm and to hear Mossy talk about birding habitat! Hers is the most wonderful, absolutely grand habitat for birds and so there are many of them nesting all over! She has lived there for over 30 years and has planted trees and bushes and other vegetation to make this an incredible place for birds. We birders were fortunate to get to visit.
Mossy emphasizes having corridors between areas of your yard so birds can move freely but yet seek cover when necessary. She lauded the pushki, nettles and raspberry plants for nesting opportunities. Alder is also great habitat and provides a firebreak near your house.
Mossy recommends fish net for windows to prevent window strikes. Fish net is easy to come by and after a few minutes, she said you get used to looking out through it. For migratory birds that have flown so far to get here, the birds deserve a chance to avoid getting killed hitting a window. The sad fact is that even if a bird strikes your window and is able to fly off that does not mean it is OK. Often it will die later or will be suffering from injuries for a long time.
We also saw and heard many great species walking down her road, at the farm and then walking down to the beach. I may not have gotten a complete list but this is most of what we saw and/or heard.
It Was a Great Day to Bird!!
