Birding at the Anchor River: 8-18-18

Postby lani » Sun Aug 19, 2018 8:08 am

In spite of a little drizzling rain and many fishermen at the Anchor River, ten Kachemak Bay Birders and a nice visiting couple from Denmark enjoyed great birding and found 29 species! It was warm, helped by the lack of wind--warm enough when walking at least to be very comfortable. (I'm sure we'll remember how warm it was when we'll be out there next for our trip in January, right?)

One of our goals was to find some shorebirds and we did: WHIMBRELS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, WILSON'S SNIPE, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS and maybe some peeps which I didn't get a good look at. One WHIMBREL was quite puzzling because it had a shorter than expected bill, so was a juvenile? We saw it several times on the ground and also flying over.

A big thanks to our trip leader, Michelle Michaud, for scouting ahead of time and knowing that beach and river area very well. It was an extremely Great Day to Bird!
