From Gary Lyon, Trip Leader.
Here is a brief report of our gathering last night (10-12-19):
Eighteen enthusiastic folks met at the prescribed location by the muskeg
bog on Ohlson Mountain Road last night at 7:30 pm. The group included
four youth in the elementary age group. The night was perfectly clear
and windless, maybe 34 degrees. We played a few varied calls from
various owl species first, to familiarize ourselves. We then proceeded
to long play calls of Northern Saw-whet, Boreal and Great Horned Owl. A
giant, orange, nearly full moon rose and illuminated us. We called in
one or two Northern Saw-whets for a brief couple of whistled notes. One
of us got lucky and even had a visual on it!
We then reconvened at the Wynn Nature Center. We played the same calls
there but got no responses. We quit at 9:00pm.
Altogether it was a "Great Night to Owl" (excepting the paucity of owls!).
